Choosing The Right Therapist

Choosing the right therapist can sometimes feel like a chore; but, it doesn’t have to be. Even when great, life isn’t without its unique set of challenges. This is where therapy can be helpful in tending to your mental health. Therapy provides a supportive, safe, and confidential space to explore and process your thoughts, and emotions and help you gain new insights. Before you begin therapy, that begs of question of “How do I choose the right therapist?”

Identifying what your needs are

This is an important step as it will allow you to reflect on why you are seeking therapy and what your concerns are. Perhaps, you are dealing with a change in your mood, be it anxiety or depression. You might find yourself experiencing transitions such as starting a new job, losing a job, getting married, having a child, moving to a new city, or the loss of a loved one etc. Being able to identify what your needs are is a pivotal step in choosing the right therapist for you.

Where to actually find a therapist

There are several effective methods to finding and choosing the right therapist. That can look like contacting your insurance provider and viewing the directories for therapists who are in network.

Personal recommendations from family and friends, as well as referrals from health care providers such as psychiatrists and primary care physicians. Online support groups can often be a good place to inquire about referrals as well. Online Directories such as Therapy For Black Girls or Psychology Today are great resources.

Therapist’s Credentials

I’ve been asked this question several times; “What is the difference between therapy and counseling” Perhaps you are wondering this yourself this yourself. These are interchangeable mental health terms. A therapist/counselor is someone who holds a Master’s or Doctorate level degree in counseling, psychology, social work, marriage and family therapy or a similar/related field.

Each state has a provider directory that makes it easy to verify a provider’s license and credentialing. Make sure that your provider is licensed to practice therapy/counseling in your state.

Experience with your area of concerns. Just like you wouldn’t see a podiatrist for your back, you’d go to a chiropractor. Make sure that your therapist has experience and expertise in the areas in which you are needing support.

It’s unethical for therapists and counselors to ask clients for reviews. However, some clients do share reviews on google on their own accord. That’s a helpful way to see what current and previous clients are saying about the provider you wish to work with.

Choosing the right therapist

There’s no instantaneous way to know if a therapist is a right fit or choose a right fit therapist; however, requesting an initial consultation can help you gauge whether or not a provider could be a good fit. A consultation provides you the opportunity to inquire about treatment methods, their therapeutic approach as well as what to expect in therapy sessions.

Other Factors to consider in choosing the right therapist

Location and hours of operations; do they offer in person or virtual services? Are their hours of operations convenient for you? When are payments collected and how much are services? Inquire about their training and experience in working with clients of diverse background to ensure cultural competence. These are factors to consider in choosing the right fit therapist for you.

Are you looking for a therapist in the state of Texas and Minnesota? I know how challenging it can be to find the right fit therapist. Schedule an initial consultation to inquire about services and review My Frequently Asked Questions page.
